Canada Day long weekend

I’m spending the last day of the long weekend at home relaxing and not doing a whole lot. After sending my parents off on a weekend trip to Vancouver Island on July 1, my husband and I stayed behind to meet up with friends and relax. I also attempted to make vegan marshmallow with the dried agar agar I bought years ago. After two failed attempts (did not bloom the agar agar properly the first time; the entire mixture became “soupy” the second time), I went online and found a recipe that claims to be “tried and tested”, and that it works 100%! All sounded great except one ingredient that was hard to get – Genutine Vegetarian Gelatin. This item, the blogger claimed, is only available through an online store (Le Sanctuaire), but I thought since we were planning to go to the States on Saturday (July 2), I might be able to find it there.

So, we got up really early on Saturday (way too early for a weekend – 6:30am!) and headed south for our day trip to Seattle and area. The border line-ups were minimal at that time of day. We crossed the border shortly after 8am. We went to a nearby McD’s for breakfast and then continued on our way. By the time we reached Seattle, it was close to 10am. Being a Saturday, lots of stores were slow to open. We went to Pike Place Market first to browse around. We walked into the famous DeLaurenti specialty food store right off the bat. We found some really interesting items, but not the  vegetarian gelatin. We also went to a couple of other places in downtown, but still no vegetarian gelatin. After Pike Place, we had seafood chowder nearby the market, since everywhere else was already packed. I was somewhat disappointed that I couldn’t find the gelatin, but happy that I bought everything else!

Seafood Chowder in a sourdough bread.

All the other food stuff we got....except for the gelatin.

My favourite is the Coconut Marshmallow coffee I got from World Market. Can't wait to try it!

Blueberry syrup and Martinelli Apple Juice in an apple-shaped bottle!

We left Seattle at around 1:30pm and head east to Bellevue. We wanted to visit the Container Store and use the gift card my friend, Gladys, gave me for my birthday last year. Yeah, it took me a while. But, I’m excited to see what kind of “goodies” I can find. Here is the result:

Our purchase at The Container Store.

My husband got a litter bag for his car.

Pocket-size salt & pepper shaker - perfect for the office!

A wall-hanging device for Peter's fishing rods.

Thanks, Gladys, for the gift card. Hope I made you proud of what I spent it on. ^_^ Happy Belated Canada Day to everyone and Happy Fourth of July to my friends in the States.
